about
Written for my friend Ernest who was shot and killed in D.C. in April 2022. While I was writing this song, both the Buffalo and Uvalde mass shootings happened. This song is dedicated to Ernest, and to all victims of gun violence.
lyrics
Turn down the lights
Another star fades
Another senseless act of violence
A useless act of hate
Families broken
Crying to sleep
You were my friend
Where I cut my teeth
When I saw something
I thought I'd never see
To think of you lying there
Knocks the wind out of me
You have no right
To silence his right to be
A cannon of light
In all his energy
Too angry to shout
Too lost to find words
My body just went numb when I finally heard
You had a laugh
That could shake a room
A giant sized spirit taken too soon
Look up at the city
Look up at the lights
Think of you living your best kind of life
Dressed all in dapper
Lived like a king
A spectacle for you get up here and sing
Why-o-why are we still here?
If it's the end of life we won't live in fear
Why-o-why are we still here?
To remember the ones who've been taken from here
Why-o-why-o-why?
Curious as the question itself
Why in the hell are we killing oursleves?
Remember your purpose
With all things sincere
Don't think for a second his spirit's not here
With all that you've done now my brother is gone
I know you'll live through us
As love conquers on
You'll always be that giant sized king
So here's yo you with love from me
Why-o-why are we still here?
If it's the end of life we won't live in fear
Why-o-why are we still here?
To remember the ones who've been taken from here
Why-o-why-o-why?
Another good man just got his wings
For nothing but standing
